How to use these numbers for direct mail

Household income tells you whether an area can afford what you sell. A roofing or pool company, for example, may care more about high-income homeowners than a pizza shop does.

Homeowners matter for anything tied to the house: home services, solar, insurance, real estate. A ZIP with a high share of renters is often a better fit for restaurants, gyms and services that don't need a homeowner's sign-off.

Recent movers show turnover. Areas where many households moved in since 2020 are full of people still choosing their dentist, gym, plumber and favorite takeout. For real estate agents, turnover hints at how often homes change hands.

Median age helps match your offer and your design to who will be reading it.

Once you know which ZIPs fit, send EDDM postcards to the carrier routes there, from 50¢ a piece. Tell us who you want to reach and we'll pick the routes where those households are most common. See EDDM targeting for how that works.

Where does this data come from?

From the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates, for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). ZCTAs are the Census Bureau's approximations of USPS ZIP code areas, so boundaries and counts can differ slightly from postal ZIP codes.

Is the household count the same as the number of postcards I'd need?

Not exactly. It's the Census count of occupied homes. EDDM goes to every address on the carrier routes you pick, so the real count depends on the routes. We confirm the exact count in your quote.

Why doesn't my ZIP code show up?

Some ZIP codes are only for PO boxes or a single large business, so the Census Bureau doesn't publish household data for them. Try a nearby residential ZIP.
